If your GP or dentist has recommended us - or if you have a procedure scheduled - this is where you can find out who we are, what we do, and what to expect.

We are a charitable trust that exists to fill a gap in our healthcare system. We provide free services to people who are unable to access care through the public system, but can’t afford private healthcare. These people are able to receive life-changing treatment because of the generosity of the Canterbury community.
When GPs, dentists, and other medical practitioners see a patient who needs our help, they can make a referral for that person to access our services.
The nurses, surgeons, dentists and oral surgeons that work at our hospital are all volunteers who willingly give their time to help the community. Many of them also have their own practices, or work in public or private hospitals.
We don’t receive Government funding. Instead, we fundraise, organise events, and rely on generous donations from the Canterbury community.

We offer a range of general surgery, gastroenterology, and dentistry/oral surgery. Our services are regularly reviewed and updated to meet the needs of the community. View our full list of services here.
To access our services, you’ll need a referral from your GP, dentist, or another mainstream medical practitioner. Ask your GP or dentist about the Charity Hospital: they know how the process works, and will be able to explain the eligibility criteria.
We may require a public hospital decline of services letter, background information about your financial situation, and a declaration that you cannot access care elsewhere. Your GP can help you find out if you are eligible for our services.
To access our dental services, you will need to be aged between 18 – 65 years (WINZ beneficiary) or 18 to 69 years (employed but have an ultra-low income). Some background information about your financial situation may be required if you do not receive one of the following benefits: supported living payment, jobseeker support, sole parent support and child disability allowance.

Our patients are treated with dignity, respect, and the highest level of care. Our hospital is a welcoming place, and our staff are professional and kind.
It’s important to us that our patients feel positive and hopeful about the difference our services will make to their lives. We want you to feel comfortable asking questions, and know that your needs are being respected. We’re glad you’re here, getting the treatment you need.
