The Canterbury Charity Hospital Trust is a registered charitable trust formed to provide free, elective day surgery and medical consultations for some people in our Canterbury community who would otherwise not have access to such services.
By the Community - For the Community
The Canterbury Charity Hospital Trust has been established by the community, for the community. Numerous leading doctors, nurses, technologists and business professionals have volunteered their time and expertise to the Charity Hospital. We provide a service to the area covered by the Canterbury DHB. We are not government funded and rely on donations, grants and support from the wider community.
Others in the community help with the day-to-day running of the hospital in terms of cleaning, catering, secretarial support and so much more. Together, we can all make a huge difference to the health and wellbeing of our community as a whole.
Mr Philip Bagshaw, a general surgeon and associate professor, recognised the need for a charity hospital when he realised that no government would be able to meet all the needs in healthcare.
He is strongly supported by his wife Dr Sue Bagshaw, who works as a GP in youth health, including mental and sexual health, Dr Randall Allardyce, a researcher who works with both the University of Otago and the University of Canterbury, and Mr Brian Stokes, a Christchurch lawyer who has long been involved in community health.
